Passage for Reading & Comprehension:
There have been many great people who lived for others. They served humanity selflessly, body and soul. Their humanitarian services were so noble that they are paid tribute even long after their death. Their valuable services helped reduce suffering and improve conditions that people lived in. We come across such great souls among the people even in these hard times. People remember them respectfully and pay them heart-felt compliments. They are extremely grateful to these altruists, philanthropists, and charities. Such friends of humanity become immortal and legendary figures in the annals of human history. They are paid homage long after they are no more with us.
One of these greatest persons who ever lived for humanity at large was Abdul Sattar Edhi, best known as the "Angel of Mercy." He started his humanitarian work in 1951 by establishing a very small dispensary in Karachi. He was mainly brought up by his mother, who, according to Edhi, had a great influence on his life. But other members of his family also contributed to shaping his life, including his father and grandfather. However, the person who apparently made Abdul Sattar Edhi the man he became was his mother. He was particularly caring where the old, handicapped, or mentally challenged people were concerned. He learned about love and care from his mother. His mother ensured that he did not waste his time. She was of the view that no one should sit at home idly; everyone should work to earn a living. After his mother's death, Edhi decided to dedicate his whole life to the service of humanity.
He bought an old wagon and converted it into an ambulance. This was the first ambulance service for the poor people. He did not charge for the ambulance service. He even started a funeral service which picked up human bodies found abandoned in the sea or at the roadside. He would even pick up these bodies himself. The ambulance service and the funeral services provided the Edhi Foundation an excellent opportunity to grow all over Pakistan.
Edhi changed his lifestyle for his mission. He changed for others. He never lost his positive attitude and confident outlook. He believed in simple living and high thinking. He gave the best example of simplicity, austerity, and economy. Edhi died in Karachi about two years ago. The man is gone, but the mission will continue to serve humanity. He was taken as a legend in his life and became immortal in the history of Pakistan. He was the first common citizen of Pakistan who received a state funeral.
