Education as an optional subject in matriculation (secondary) and intermediate (higher secondary) levels was included as part of the education policy reforms in Pakistan in 1972.

This policy aimed to diversify the curriculum and provide students with broader choices in their studies, including the option to choose Education as a subject of study.
