Leuckart and Frey proposed the term Coelenterata in 1847.

The word comes from ancient Greek words meaning "hollow" and "intestine".

Coelenterata is the scientific name for a phylum of invertebrates that includes jellyfish, sea anemones, corals, and hydras.

They are also known as Cnidarians.
