Brazil has confirmed the world's first death from Oropouche fever.

In July 2024, Brazilian authorities recorded the deaths of two women, aged 21 and 24, who had severe abdominal pain, bleeding and hypotension.

The two dead are women under 30, who lived in Brazilian Bahia state and had no comorbidities.

Their symptoms were similar to severe dengue fever.
