In the 16th century, Ottoman Turkey was primarily ruled by Suleiman the Magnificent, reigning from 1520 to 1566.

He was succeeded by his son Selim II, who ruled from 1566 to 1574, continuing his father's policies.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottoman Empire was controlling much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, the Caucasus, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa.
