The name "Kairouan" comes from a Persian word that means "a camp". 

It was the first Islamic capital in the Maghreb. 

The Great Mosque of Kairouan was built when the city was founded. 

Kairouan is located in north-central Tunisia, on the Basse Steppe (Low Steppes).

It is a holy city of Islam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
