Explanation

The Greater Thal Canal (GTC) draws water from the Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal, which diverts water from the Indus River.

The GTC is a non-perennial irrigation scheme that provides water from April to September. The GTC's components include:

• Main Canal: 35 km long
• Mankera Branch Canal: 65 km long
• Choubara Branch Canal: 73 km long
• Dhingana Branch Canal: Includes the Mahmood Sub-Branch Canal and Noorpur Branch Canal systems 

The GTC was inaugurated in 2001 by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. The second phase of the project, the Choubara Branch, was launched in 2020.
