Maharaja Hari Singh, the Hindu ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, signed the Instrument of Accession with India on October 26, 1947, following tribal invasions supported by Pakistan.

This treaty granted India control over Kashmir’s defense, communications, and foreign affairs.
