China is the world's first and Vietnam is second largest deposits of rare earth minerals.

It was the scarcity of these minerals that led to them being called rare earths. Rare Earths are a group of 15 elements in the periodic table known as the Lanthanide series. 

Uses:

They are used in the manufacture of high-tech devices such as smart phones and electric car batteries.
