The official name "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" was selected for the state of Pakistan in the 1956 constitution.

Islam is declared the state religion of Pakistan.

The Constituent Parliament passed it on  February 29, 1956, and entered into force on  March 23, 1956, proclaiming Pakistan as the Islamic Republic.
