Explanation

In December 2024, Russia declared a federal emergency due to massive oil spill from storm-damaged tankers near the Kerch Strait. 

The spill released thousands of tons of heavy fuel oil, polluting 55 kilometers (34 miles) of the Black Sea coast. 

Concerns have risen about cleanup efforts and long-term environmental damage in the Black Sea, which spans 436,000 square kilometers and is bordered by six countries.
