The mountain was first measured by Godwin Austen in 1856.

Godwin Austen was an English topographer (surveyor) who made significant contributions to the mapping of the region.

K2 is also known as Mount Godwin-Austen in honor of Henry Godwin-Austen, an early explorer of the Karakoram range.

K2 is the second-highest mountain in the world, following Mount Everest.

K2 is situated on the China–Pakistan border.

It is part of the Karakoram range and extends into the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

Among the five highest mountains on Earth, K2 is regarded as the deadliest due to its challenging climbing conditions and high fatality rates.
