Let the number be x
1/4 of the number = 1/4(x) =x/4
1/3 of the number = 1/3(x) =x/3
1/4 of a number subtracted from 1/3 of the number gives 12.
x/3-x/4 =12
x/3×4/4 - x/4×3/3 =12
4x/12 - 3x/12 =12
(4x-3x)/12=12
4x-3x=12×12
x=144
