Pervez Musharraf returned from Sri Lanka when he imposed martial law in Pakistan on October 12, 1999.

He was on an official visit to Sri Lanka and was dismissed as military chief while he was away.

He returned to Pakistan and led a military coup against the government, eventually declaring himself the chief executive of the country.
