Explanation

Pitt's India Act of 1784 provided for a joint government of British India by the East India Company and the Crown, with the government holding the ultimate authority.

This act established a Board of Control, which consisted of six members, including a Secretary of State and the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The act also reduced the Governor-General's council to three members and gave the Governor-General the final say.

The Presidencies of Madras and Bombay were made subordinate to the Bengal Presidency.

Calcutta became the capital of the British possessions in India.
