The Indian National Congress was formed in 1885 with the primary purpose of providing a platform for civic and political dialogue among educated Indians.

The Congress was established by Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British Indian Civil Service officer, with the goal of creating a space where Indians could discuss and address political and social issues.

The Congress also aimed to promote Indian participation in the governance of their own country and to advocate for Indian rights and interests.
