At the time of the partition of Punjab, there were nineteen jails in the province. 

There are 43 jails in the province of Punjab, Pakistan.

These include:

9 Central Jails

19 District Jails

2 Borstal Institutes, Juvenile Jails, and 1 Women's Jail.

The Women Jail in Multan was constructed in 1973-74. 

Pakistan has four dedicated women's prisons—

• Three in Sindh (Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur)
• One in Punjab (Multan)

The appointment is made by the Chief Minister on the recommendation of the Departmental Recruitment/Selection Committee

The appointed IG Prisons then reports to the Home Department of the Provincial Government.
